Just a few things to be aware of for next season . All karts must have their number displayed clearly on all four sides of kart. Highly recommend 6" black numbers on white panel. Very important for scorers benefit.
IKF rule " 401.20 Lighting Devices. No display lighting devices are allowed on karts,e.g. valve stem lights ,etc. Illumination for engine monitoring device is allowed." Please mention these rules to anyone you know that may not be currently compliant.

As a scorer, I see the reason for clearly visible numbers, especially in large classes. White on black is good, as is black on white. Also some people have different numbers on one part of their kart that others. However, what is the safety reason behind the "no lights"? I think they are cool looking, spectators like them, and I don't see that they are more apt to fall off and become debris on the track that the various other things we see; chains, neck braces, air filters, number plates, etc. Just asking a question. I am a believer that rules should be for safety and fair competition only, not "just because".

That rule has been in the rule book for years. I have no idea on it's origin. I'll try to get the history on it. I only mentioned it because the question as to if the rule was in the rulebook came up.

You are talking about the IKF rulebook?? Well then..... they are probably saying it's a distraction to other drivers (?) The same reason they insisted my daughter put her hair inside her driving suit (it was purple at the time) at a Nationals in the mid 1990's. Another male driver with long blonde hair was not told to put his hair in. Her feelings " if they are distracted by my hair, they are not good drivers anyway! They should be racing, not gawking at my hair!" IKF rules serve as a good guideline, not the bible of karting, IMO. I feel some people tend to nitpick the rule book, 'cause they can't be successful any other way. People, it's supposed to be FUN. That's why I am going to watch from now on.

The long hair rule is definitely in the rule book and I know the reason is safety, mostly due to the proximity to the chain. It applies to male and female alike. I have mentioned this to many racers, male and female , many times through the years in pre-tech. As usual your insight and experience is right on and always appreciated. You hit the nail right on the head about nit-picking rules, especially to make up for one's own deficiencies. I just figured out the light rule thanks to your comment on distraction. What first caught my eye was the lights on the kart that had the red lights. My split second first thought was that his brake rotor was glowing. Sort of makes sense when you sit down and analyze. Thanks again for your input.

I can say the lights distract some officials, probably not so much racers, When karts gets strung out, and as a past official, i have caught out the corner of my eye, flashing valve stem lights. My first thought was accident and the flagger was was flashing red light. Other than that, it wasn't a problem. I think a better choice would be to allow headlights, would stop the need for track lighting ! Just an idea.

Lonny , yes it is. Problem is ,even though it's not a performance item there are people racing at AKA that would cause a stink because such a rule is not being enforced. We could easily call it a local option but even when I do that the same previously mentioned group will still jump on such a CS matter if they are bettered by someone with lighted valve stems in a race. Perhaps they would not if the lights were orange. Good luck to all next season.

I agree that lights would be distracting....Regarless of color....
I think your reference to orange was not nice. This is not the place to continue your fued.
All I can say is "Rules" are there for reasons, when you stretch them or let someone break a rule, then rules no longer work. If rules can't be followed by everyone, then the rule needs to be changed.

You're correct about my comments about the orange lights. I'm still winding down.

All this complaint about my lights. Id like to know the rule about tech right after the race, sure i'm new to karts, but i'm pretty sure the kart cannot leave the area before it is cleared.

Your lights were not a concern. I just wanted to make it known that it is in the rulebook as I was told it wasn't. I'm not trying to prove I was correct but I do know that if it is in the rulebook and isn't addressed a fellow competitor may make a stink. Please, everyone, read this again , calmly and slowly ,and grasp that I am only trying to prevent silly post race arguments.
